Looking for a way to raise funds for the fight against cancer but not exactly sure how to go about it? The solution is to participate in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life Fundraisers. This particular fundraiser is designed to meet multiple goals which include raising funds for cancer research and education, enhancing cancer awareness within the community, and empowering those who have been affected by the disease.

Many people are familiar with traditional cancer walks such as the Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk or Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. These cancer walks are usually individual oriented events in which individuals are required to walk a certain distance while raising money for cancer. The Relay for Life Fundraisers differ in that they are more of a team oriented event.

The Relay for Life Fundraisers are an overnight fundraising event which takes place at local schools, parks, fairgrounds, or tracks. It requires teams of 8-15 people to participate in a continuous 24 hour relay race. Laps around the course can be completed by walking or running. While team members may complete their laps interchangeably, rules stipulate that one member from each team is required to be on the track at all times.

Teams are required to raise a specific amount of funds in order to participate in the relay. Each member must raise a minimum of $100 each as well as a $10 commitment fee. Ideas used to raise funds for Relay for Life Fundraisers are endless and include barbeques, car washes, bake goods sales, casino nights, craft fairs, candy bar sales, raffles, and auctions.

One popular idea used to raise funds is to sell bracelets. These bracelets are available in many different varieties and have been very successful. These bracelets are made of rubber and come in a variety of colors imprinted with different inspirational messages.

Another popular and traditional fundraising method for Relay for Life Fundraisers is to sell luminaria. Luminaria are candles placed in white paper sacks which bear the names of loved ones who have cancer. At sundown during the relay, the luminaria are placed around the track and lighted in what is called the Ceremony of Hope. Luminaria can be purchased through a donation of $10.

However, the Relay of Life Fundraisers aren't limited to participation in the relay. People can participate in many other activities. These activities include helping local American Cancer Society (ACS) offices, sponsoring a relay, and volunteering specific talents to different committees such as publicity and entertainment.

Relay for Life Fundraisers have come a long way from its humble beginnings. It was created by Dr. Gordy Klatt who was inspired by his desire to raise funds for his local American Cancer Society office and his passion for running. The first relay was held in 1986 and included the participation of 19 teams that raised $33,000 in funds. In 1996 the ACS declared the Relay for Life Fundraiser its signature activity.
Relay for Life Fundraisers are now the nation's largest non-profit fundraising event. Since 2003, it has attracted more than 3 million participants and raised $265 million at more than 4,300 sites across the United States. Relay for Life Fundraisers have spread into a global movement and are held in over ten countries.

Relay for Life Fundraisers are a perfect way to involve the community in a team effort to address the deadly disease that is cancer. Not only does this particular fundraiser raise significant funds for cancer research and education, it also spreads cancer awareness within the community. This event has raised enough funds for the ACS to spend over $100 million annually funding research grants. Hopefully, advances towards fighting and stopping cancer will arrive soon.
