To legally be able to register as a charity there are strict regulations that must be followed. It is deemed that there must be a charitable purpose, which includes relief of financial hardship, the advancement of education, the advancement of religion and other purposes that benefit the community. The Red Cross, Green Peace and The Make-A-Wish Foundation are all well known charities in America.
Charity Fundraising Facts
There are many ways to raise money for charities, but the main point is communicating with the target audience the cause and needs.
Mailings can be a great way to contact individuals or businesses without costing too much. Without taking up too much of the audience’s time, a letter can inform the recipients of all the necessary information to persuade a donation.
Another common form of charity fundraising is by telephone, which requires little money and less time than say walking door to door. Door to door charity fundraising does have its benefits though. A more personal and direct approach often yields greater results.
There are also many different ways to advertise such as newspapers, magazines, TV and radio. Although this is a more costly approach, a large target audience can be contacted. For example, a charity for Breast Cancer research may choose to put an advertisement in a woman's magazine or on a woman's network.
Lastly, and most famously, are events, such as, fashion shows and dinners. People will pay a good deal of money to attend a high class event.
Tips for a Successful Event
The first step in successful charity fundraising is organization. What do you want to accomplish? What cause are you fighting for? How much money do you want to raise? All of these questions must be answered before a plan can begin.
Next, volunteers must be gathered and given specific jobs as well as money. A time and a place must then be selected. Make sure it is convenient for your target audience. In general, weekends and nights are much better than weekdays.
Publicity, publicity, publicity. Without advertising your cause and event, no one will show up. The audience needs to know the cause they will be donating their time and money to is a worthy one.
Lastly, a celebrity figure willing to donate his/her time could help enormously with any charity fundraising event.
